Originally this car started life as a 1967 Tempest Station Wagon. Over the last 6 years of ownership, I've transformed it into what I envision Pontiac may have built, had they ever offered a GTO wagon.
Currently, the original 326 in underhood, albeit with some minor performance modifications. It now sports a Quadrajet, ram air pan and associated opened hood scoop.
Other driveline mod's include the installation of a turbo 400 (in lieu of the original 2 spd automatic), 3:23 10 bolt Posi, and true dual exhaust.
The front suspension now has PST polygraphite bushings, springs, a 1 1/4" sway bar, and an 11" power disc conversion.
Out back, boxed lower control arms, factory GTO sway bar, polygraphite bushings, new springs, 1 1/2" spring spacers and Air Bags are in place.
Tires and wheels are 14x7" Rally II's up front and 15x7" out back all sporting BFG Radial T/A's.
In the appearance department, 67 GTO badging is in place as well as a GTO hood, grills, parking lights, and hood tach installed.
Inside, a set of correct 67 GTO buckets was installed, the entire interior was recovered in black cloth and vinyl, and a new carpet installed. The headliner is still factory original and perfect.
Overall, the car is a lot more fun to drive today. It cruises effortlessly, handles and stops far better than new, and still has a bit of performance to haul the nearly 2 tons of steel around.
Future plans include the installation of a 455 (currently under construction), Borg Warner ST-10 4 speed, and a 3:55 Posi to round out the package. Additionally, all of the needed body work will be performed and the car repainted in white.
I believe I represent what many Pontiac Lovers are when it comes to the cars we have in our garage. Most of us love to look at the beautifully restored or restified cars, but they typically represent a dream we may never live out. And while most of us can't afford a frame off restoration, or a high dollar engine ourselves, we do what we can with what we have. Most of our beloved Pontiacs are projects that we slowly transform as the years go by and dollars become available. We use them for everything from pleasure cruising to drag racing, and in all cases, we simply enjoy owning and tinkering with our rides. To me, that's what owning my classic Pontiac is all about!
Too Much Fun!
